Today is the 4th of July, Independence Day, commemorating the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Today, I want to talk about another independence. Independence from our exhaustive lifestyle that keeps us in bondage. There is a price to pay if we continue to ignore the exhaustion and just keep pushing and striving, as we ignore the only One that can give us true peace, the One we should be dependent on; Jesus! Jesus wants us dependent on Him, so he can show us how to slow down. He just wants to spend time with us!
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
So, What… for This Week?
On this last day of a long weekend, take some time to rest in God and ask yourself some questions. Where do you feel hurried, overwhelmed, rushed or exhausted? Now imagine yourself at rest right now. What does resting with Jesus feel like? Lastly, as you step back into your busy life, take some practical steps to guard your times of quiet and rest with Jesus. Commit to someone else that will hold you accountable to that time of rest and get to know Jesus even better. He is waiting for you!
