As we step into 2023, one thing you may need to do is to learn how to receive. I’m not sure about you, but I am TERRIBLE at receiving gifts. I’m reminded of that each and every Christmas, as I can get really awkward when I have to open gifts. Sadly, I do the same with the FREE gifts that God wants me to have, starting with His Son, Jesus Christ! I was recently reminded of how my pride can also get in the way of receiving gifts, a few months ago when my kids were in Buffalo celebrating Molly’s dad getting honored as the winningest coach in UB’s (University of Buffalo) history. I was celebrating my 10th year anniversary in Florida with Victoria and couldn’t be in two places at one time. At the last minute, Victoria and my son Chris schemed up a plan for me to fly to Buffalo from Sarasota for the weekend. As you can imagine, a last minute flight is not cheap and we didn’t have the money to make the trip. Chris said he would pay for my flight. I was so honored that my kids wanted me there, but at the same time, my pride was challenged as I needed to let my son pay for MY trip. I prayed and decided to receive the gift and go on an adventure (with my saintly wife’s consent). God was SO eager to love on me that weekend, as everything fell into place perfectly. (and that is saying A LOT for the airline industry these days!)
Matthew 18:3-4 (NLT)
3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
So, What… for This Week?
I’m coming to realize that God wants to bless me beyond measure and being able to receive a gift with gratitude is a sign of a healthy, humble spirit, which is also pleasing to Him. Both pride and low self-esteem prevent us from participating in all God has for us! So, this year, learn how to receive ALL God has for you. Accept His love and all that comes with that!
Inspiring message & so true at times how pride is at the root of our not receiving God’s gifts! Thanks!
